Why go beyond recycling?
Expanding composting beyond recycling involves households separating their food scraps and soiled paper to be collected and composted by municipal programs. It builds on the more than 8,000 local programs where residents separate bottles, cans and newspapers for recycling. By doing so, in the 21st century, we can achieve –
● A major reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from methane emitted at landfills
● A significant reduction in threats from groundwater pollution at landfills
● An increase in overall diversion rates from about 1/3 to over 2/3 of discards
